An International Gender Strategy to Transform How We Address Hunger

How the International Gender Unit contributed to the development, implementation and evidence-based adjustment of the Gender Strategy.

In 2010, during the implementation of a Gender-based Violence and Food Security and Livelihoods programme in Uganda, we realised that Action Against Hunger lacked a formalised gender policy and technical guidance to strengthen gender-sensitive capacity throughout our programmes. As a result, the International Gender Equality Policy and Strategy and a gender toolkit were developed by the newly formed International Gender Unit. Since then, the International Gender Unit at Action Against Hunger has supported country offices in the implementation of the policy, including through the creation of the Gender Minimum Standards, to which country offices strive to adhere, with the support of the Gender Community of Practice. The International Gender Unit now turns to its next challenge: move past the gender sensitive approach and lay the groundwork for gender-transformative programming, which will be the focus of the new Gender Equality Strategy to be released in 2021.
