No Wasted Lives

A Global Coalition to accelerate action for children with acute malnutrition

The No Wasted Lives Coalition is an inter-agency effort to promote a coordinated approach to child health and nutrition. We are building on the excellent work already being done, while supporting governments, donors, and NGOs to realise the synergies of cooperation.

By working together, No Wasted Lives is making wasting a political and public health priority, discovering and disseminating effective ways to prevent and treat acute malnutrition, mobilising more money and maximising the effectiveness of current spending.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by 193 countries that agreed to progress for all people by 2030. Through this commitment, global leaders also committed to eliminating all preventable child deaths.

With malnutrition serving as the underlying cause of almost 50 percent of child deaths, we must drive concerted and coordinated action if we expect to achieve the SDG promise to leave no one behind. Failure to prevent and treat malnutrition at scale undermines the effectiveness of efforts to tackle other diseases such as malaria, diarrhoea and pneumonia.

Children threatened and affected by acute malnutrition are at a disadvantage. They are up to 11 times more likely to die than well-nourished children and, while 90 percent of children who complete treatment for acute malnutrition are cured, less than 25 percent of them have access to treatment.

In the face of this injustice, the No Wasted Lives Coalition says “no more.” With the backing of the world’s leading international organisations, we are driving a movement where prevention, early detection and treatment of acute malnutrition are scaled up, and can deliver impact at unprecedented levels for our world’s children. Coalition founding institutions are: Action Against Hunger, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, the European Commission Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), the innocent foundation, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the UK Department for International Development (DFID), UNICEF, and World Food Programme (WFP).

No Wasted Lives is undeterred in calling for deliberate action to combat acute malnutrition, and making it a global priority requiring innovation, investment and catalytic policy and implementation commitments.

We are championing the acceleration of a child survival revolution. We will not stand by and accept an unjust reality that will stall global progress toward health and prosperity for all.

No wasted lives. No preventable deaths. A promise made to all children.
